Rainbow Rice!!

We LOVE colored rice over here!
In fact the first time we made it, we started out by making green, blue, and purple rice...and then it didn't take long for us to realize we needed all of the colors of the rainbow and added red, orange, and yellow! We now affectionately call it rainbow rice-because HOW can you possibly make just one color?! The colors are beautiful together!

Anytime there are little animals or people figures involved, my daughter LOVES it! Double the fun!

You could really add anything you want for fun, imaginative play:
funnels
 sifters
 measuring cups
 little people
 little animals
pom-poms
lids

Colored Rice Instructions
1 cup of rice
2 Tb rubbing alcohol
3 + drops of food coloring

Put all of the above items into a sandwich size zip top bag, close the bag and mix and squish.
(the kids will love to help with the squishing of the bag!)

Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil, pour the now colored rice onto the cookie sheet and let dry overnight.

*To play with your rice sooner, put the baking sheet with rice into a low oven (about 175*) for roughly 15 minutes (check to see if the rice is dry)
Beware: sometimes the fumes have been super potent when I've opened the oven door, but nothing harmful, several blogger friends have done it this way as well.

The rice will cool pretty quickly after taken out of the oven, make sure the rice is cool before you let your child play with it. Why don't you make another color while you wait?! :)

...............................................................

what would you add to YOUR rainbow rice to encourage more imaginative play?!
Leave me a comment below!

(I highly recommend a dropcloth or towels for this activity-SUPER messy, yet SUPER fun, provides an hour or two of entertainment, just keep a close eye on it so it doesn't get everywhere including curious little mouths-I can imagine it's not too good for the tummy!!)
